Updates
time for a little update... lets see how much i can remember...
September 2008.
1st week was hell... was rushing 5 dashboards in a week with all the ad hoc and regular reports... Plus locations and departments creations... i have to complete them in 1 week as im going for reservist at de 2nd week...
Basically i was OTing all the way for the 1st week...
1st day of September 2nd week was crazy... Its my 1st In Camp Training aka ICT. I was totally clueless on what i need to do and where to go. Nevertheless, its also de same for the rest of the pple... But since I am de CSM (Company Sergent Major) for HQ, Im force to know everything in a short notice...
and im not de only one who has to do tat. Delta and Support CSMs also walked the same path as me. The good thing is, the 3 of us know each other before hand... so we can communicate well enough to get things going smooth and well...
Admin was a huge headache as all of us are 1st timers. Wats worse is tat our RSM (Regimental Sergent Major) was not ard. He was away on course. He is the one who should give us instructions and guide us on the ground.
and because he is away, and according to hierarchy status, i became the Stand In RSM. it was stressful as i have never taken upon a CSM post when i was active... let alone the RSM post...
so yea, the 1st week was horrendous... even though only the commanders come in at de 1st week, (the men starts to come in at the 2nd week) the admin is still chaotic as my company, HQ, has its full strength in from the very 1st week...
Discipline is always an issue when we are in a uniformed organization. If you don take tame ur subordinates, they will climb over you. Too much of a iron fist and they will rebel. And since its ICT, the balance of discipline is very delicate. one wrong move and its all over...
Somehow, i managed to get them going. the good thing is, all of them are good pple. its not hard to convince the commanders. its harder to convince the men on the things that you ordered them to do.
Some of the CSMs has said that its hard to get the men to listen to them. To me, its not all that hard once u know how to play on their maturity, how to use their age against them, and also, let them know the reason on the orders that you gave to them.
In order to instill discipline and my authority over them, the 1st move i made is to make them clean up the bunks. This is not easy. Even commanders in active them has problem making them men clean up the bunk on their own accord.
It all started out the same the moment u tell them that u wan to clean their bunk up to the standard u set for them. They complain saying that they are reservist, they are going to stay in that hell hole for 3 weeks. so whats de point of making them clean de bunk...
my junior commanders were looking at me for an answer and my officers were looking at how i perform... i have already anticipated this problem to surface once i pass this order. i can do it by 2 ways. One is to tell them its an order and rule by the iron fist. Or i convince them to clean the bunk themselves, happily without complaints.
I opt for the 2nd option.
I gathered all of them on their accommodation level, right outside one of the bunk. I told them the reason why i wan them to clean their bunk. The reason is simple, so simple that they cant say no...
1.) Since they all are living the bunk, its better to live in a place where its clean, bright and comfortable. These pple have wife, gf, children waiting for them at home. Its not nice to come to camp, stay in a dump and get urself sick.
2.) Once the bunk got cleaned, its jus maintainance. they don have to do a large scale cleaning everytime before they booked out. saves time and effort.
they agreed with me and proceed to clean the bunk up. i have won half the battle... or so i thought.
2nd week was pure hell... our RSM is still not back yet and i have been running the show for the past week. i lost of my voice on de 3rd day. all the rifle company men starts to come in. its another scamble for chaos admin issues.
however, the CSMs already has experience and things were hectic but not so bad. during the 3rd day of the 2nd week, i ordered a bunk inspection at 1500 hrs. the men told me that they would be ready by 1430.
but at 1400 hrs, i receive orders from CO to move out with de rifle company to take a look training issues... which means, to move out to field with him to overlook training. before i left, i told the men tat i cancel off the bunk inspection and they are allowed to do what they wan.
i came back from field at around 2200 hrs. when i reach camp, one of my fellow CSM told me that my men has been cleaning their bunk till now...
I was like, 'huh? wth? i told them that i cancel off the bunk inspection...'
i went upstairs and take a look. true enough, most of them are still cleaning de bunk. They even take out the moss which grew on the ground and on de wall... the fire extinguishers were free of dust and the corridor was devoid of dust.
i was shocked and i ask them whether did they receive de orders that i had cancel the bunk inspection. they said yes... but they still think tat since they have time to work more on it, they might as well do it.
I know i had win them over...
At tat nite, i conduct a informal inspection. even i was shocked by the cleanliness of it... If BMT recruits came and saw, i believe tat they will be in awe... even them cant set the standard and yet these grown up men has shown me wat they can do.
The other CSMs heard me boasting abt the standard and decided to come up and take a look... after they saw it, they walk away dejected... they told me tat theres no way they can make their man do like how i make my men did it. One even commented tat its a resort...
3rd week was relatively easy since my RSM is back from course. Things were left to him and i managed to have more time to myself... and things ran more smoothly as i can focus on my own company more... so no hiccups...
